SEPTEMBER 22, 2008 CLEAR CHANNEL OUTDOOR INTRODUCES PIONEERING NEW LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY TO BILLBOARD PORTFOLIOClear Channel Outdoor UK is working with Way Forward Technologies to replace fluorescent tube lighting systems across its backlit billboard portfolio with a pioneering new energy efficient linear LED ‘Luminaire’ lighting system. As part of Clear Channel Outdoor’s award-winning commitment to developing sustainable products and business practices, the development of this new LED lighting system will transform the way outdoor sites are illuminated and significantly reduce their energy consumption. Following a successful trial in Chiswick, London, Clear Channel Outdoor has begun its conversion of backlights and scrollers to the LED Luminaire system, with the aim of converting a substantial percentage of its back-lit London estate across 96-sheets, 48-sheets and mega 6-sheet sites by Q1 2009 in phase one. Each ‘Luminaire’ consists of hundreds of LEDs. Luminaires operate in banks of 10 which are then linked together via an IP65 rated (dust and waterproof) plug and socket system to a 97% efficient power supply. While the illumination and presentation of the advertising creative is improved with a clearer, crisper display, the electricity consumption is reduced by 75% through the introduction of LED Luminaire. The life expectancy of the LED product stands at 50,000 hours continuous use with a warranty that is far superior to fluorescent tubes. According to Mark Webb, Operations Director at Clear Channel Outdoor UK: “Our adoption of LED Luminaire technology will save energy, reduce the recycling of the tens of thousands of fluorescent tubes we generate every year and through the superior life expectancy and reliability of this product we will also reduce the amount of maintenance miles our service crews undertake. This new technology will not only work towards reducing the carbon footprint of ourselves and our advertisers, it will also result in an improvement in our advertising display and a significant saving on electricity prices. We hope the rest of the industry will follow suit in investing for the future.” Clear Channel Outdoor’s work in energy efficiency, recycling and fleet management were all cited as instrumental in its inclusion in The Sunday Times compilation of the UK’s 50 Best Green Companies in 2008. Richard Caseby, Managing Editor of The Sunday Times, explains: “The 50 Best Green Companies demonstrate that you must have a link between the environmental aims and policies emanating from the boardroom and the people who will largely put them into practice on the shop floor. The 50 companies listed in this report are all pioneers – enterprising, enlightened and fizzing with new ideas.” To find out more about Clear Channel’s Corporate Responsibility initiatives visit http://www.clearchannel.co.uk/content.aspx?ID=319&ParentID=33&MicrositeID=0&Page=1&AlternateURL=Clear%20Channel%20-%20corporate.
