APRIL 1, 2009 CCO POINTS THE WAY IN GLASGOW WITH NEW TOURIST SIGNAGE SYSTEM AND AD PANELSThe City of Glasgow’s new pedestrian tourist sign system is currently being installed with 149 maps, information panels and finger posts to be in place by the end of June. Developed by Clear Channel Outdoor, the way-finding system also incorporates more than 300 new ad panels on premium FSUs across the city.According to the Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Councillor Steven Purcell: “So much has changed in Glasgow’s tourism landscape over the last 15 years. These new signs not only better reflect the many great attractions Glasgow has to offer, but also serve to underline the city’s seriousness about becoming a major league tourist destination. “They are the first physical signs of Glasgow’s Tourism Action Plan to 2016, launched earlier this month, and will provide a 21st century welcome to the many more visitors we expect to receive.” The signage will replace the existing blue tourist signs at no cost to the Council as the scheme is funded through advertising income. While there will be no advertising panels in the conservation areas of the city, they will be situated on key arterial routes such as London Road, Gallowgate, Alexandra Parade, Bain Street, Moir Street and Tradeston as well as key city centre locations such as George Square, Hanover Street, Bath Street, Buchanan Station and Howard Street which gives Clear Channel Outdoor a strong advertising presence in the centre of the City. According to Dave Huckerby, Development Director at Clear Channel Outdoor: “Glasgow is a major European city associated with internationally recognised, high quality urban renewal. We have worked closely with Glasgow City Council to develop an integrated street furniture strategy in line with the topography and character of this vibrant city.” The signs incorporate best practice and research with regards to being visible and readable by people with visual impairment and people with disabilities. Made of high quality vitreous enamel, the new signs have a design life of 25 years. The area maps and key orientation signs will also have accent lighting through solar panels to be seen easily at night. Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and this award, allied to Clear Channel Outdoor’s exclusive street furniture contracts with Edinburgh and Aberdeen, ensures Clear Channel Outdoor dominates the 6-sheet market north of the border.
