MAY 24, 2009 CLEAR CHANNEL OUTDOOR NAMED ONE OF THE UK'S TOP GREEN COMPANIESClear Channel Outdoor UK has been named as one of the greenest companies in Britain for the second year running in the Sunday Times Green List of the UK’s Best Green Companies. The Sunday Times Best Green Companies venture is unique as it is the first awards scheme that has a robust methodology to measure environmental performance and to survey staff to find out whether the green sheen is more than skin deep. Richard Caseby, Managing Editor of The Sunday Times, explains: “The 60 companies listed are all at the forefront of efforts to produce real environemtal change – enterprising, enlightened and fizzing with new ideas. All have a common purpose about their corporate social responsibility.” Clear Channel Outdoor, one of only three media companies to make the top 60 along with The National Magazine Company and MediaCom, was cited for its energy saving and recycling commitments. According to The Sunday Times: “Clear Channel has seen the light when it comes to saving energy. The outdoor advertising company has introduced solar panel mounted bus shelters, which have lights powered by photovoltaic panels on the roof. “The London-based firm is also illuminating its billboards with light-emitting diodes (LED lighting), which can reduce energy consumption by up to 70%. The workforce believes its environmental commitments are serious, giving a 75% positive green score. The organisation does everything it can to minimise impact (71%).” In the employee survey, an 81% score showed that Clear Channel staff do not consider environmental initiatives a waste of money. Clear Channel has spent a total of £281,500 on boosting its environmental performance over the past two years. Among other things, this has paid for company vans to be adapted to run on liquid petroleum gas, cutting carbon emissions. According to Rob Atkinson, Managing Director at Clear Channel Outdoor UK: “Clear Channel Outdoor is fully committed to assessing and improving its environmental impact by initiating company-wide ethical and sustainable business policies in the UK and we look forward to benchmarking our environmental performance next year.” Author: Zoe Jones Reply Email: zoe.jones@clearchannel.co.uk |
